One Photo Lino | One Photo Every Day

One year ago I started a project with my child. It was taking a photo every day, in a simple, easy setup at home. I wanted to teach him consistency and also how $1 per photo was nothing in the beginning but little-by-little it was going to be a significant amount for him and a lesson for his life.

My child is not famous for wanting to save or for keeping long term projects, like every kid, he needs to see the result immediately, but this time it worked, he is excited on getting one dollar for every photo that he can't actually spend until his birthday (I keep $1 bills and give him after the shoot then he adds on a home-based piggy bank).

Even when we didn't get the 150 photos (I share custody and he is back and forth from houses), he got excited yesterday (on his birthday) when he counted and, after his Birthday Party, we went to downtown and he was available to buy a used Xbox. He called immediately super proud "Dad, look what I bought with my own money and I worked my butt off for it". Now, for the first time in his life he is asking me for more "job" and wants to continue our project for another year, and maybe this time we will get really one photo every day and all the 150 expected, and maybe he can buy a new Xbox (and I have one year to convince him on a better choice! :). The best of all? My pre-teen is letting his photographer-mom continue making her job of wanted to photograph him ;) Win! Win!

The idea is to create a giant collage for the wall and so, every year... I will be making a post of how I am using the photos and how I will print it professionally. They are not fully edited more than just passed to black and white... They are not perfect, but all together are a beautiful composition and a special time that we will cherish forever.

The setup was simple, I used two big foam boards (bough in art-supplies stores)  taped to make an "L", on the left I have a wall and a window, I used just a little of the window part as a light over his back and hair and used a white foam board (sometimes) on the front to reflex some light on his eyes... all super easy, homemade, we took just 5 photos each time,  2 minutes shoot and usually after bed or before school.  The project is called #onePhotoLino and #onePhotoDay. Let me know if you would like to try it and I would love to see it... Feel free to ask any questions, I could make more posts to explain more, but today, I am exhausted, with summer and the busy wedding season, and his home-made birthday party.!

Check out some of my favorite photos, the first one is from July 2018 and last was in July 2019.

Enjoy a slideshow with all the photos taken from July 2018 until July 2019 -

Here you have a BTS ( a photo straight of the camera), you can see the set-up (when I open the foam boards that I keep folded on the wall), the window is on the left, and a stool where he sits.

New Presets ByLorena

Big news for my friends and clients! I have adapted my own food presets for you and are now available! So, anyone can use them on their phones and edit anywhere. After installation, it is just one button to edit your photos!

I have used almost all the apps in the market for editing, and have decided to use in this case Lightroom for you to use my presets (some people call it filters) as it is the most similar to what a professional photographer uses, but the mobile version is simplified and it is free. So, you just will need to download the Lightroom app and install my presets. After that, each time you want to edit a photo, open Lightroom, click on the preset that you want and adjust the light (up if it is too dark or down if it is too bright, but only if needed).

This is perfect for my personal branding clients and lifestyle or food bloggers. These presets are professional looking, timeless, elegant and have that little pinkish that you can see on my own photos. This was created for any level and to simplify your life while will be giving to your photos similar looking and coherency.

My first collection of presets created is for FOOD. Look at the greens, you will find that my presets give you the options of having greens more cooler or warmer depending on what you want for that picture you are editing. So, if you are someone that love taking photos of food, or a coach, a nutritionist, a wellness expert, a lifestyle blogger, a traveler, the owner of a restaurant these are perfect for you... also they can work very well with products and interiors (just try them...)

Please notice that this is only a filter, a good photo is defined by many other facts. Light, composition, and the story behind.

What do you need?

1.- You will need to install the Free Lightroom app (it is an app from Adobe and it is free for the phone or tablets).

• Apple: Download it from Apple Store if you have an iPhone or iPad (It supports Apple 9iOS 10 and later).

• Download it from Google Play if you have an Android ( 5.x (Lollipop) and later.

2.- Install the 5 presets (do you need to do this the first time). After you have purchased the Preset Collection, you will receive a zip file with 5 PNG images (yes, you will receive 5 presets this time "Presets ByLorena FOOD" and a guide of how to install and how to use them.  Personally, I will send them to my first buyers by email. Please contact me if you have any questions, I am super excited to launch my first group of preset and I want them to be very helpful for you!

The Generation With No Photos

Yes, I know… anyone with a smartphone and a camera is calling themselves a photographer, and the image they snap is called a photo, or if you took a photography class then it’s called a photograph.

But I disagree, it is an image and not a photograph. Images will disappear over time and your memories with that single moment captured in time.

My new phone has 256 GB (the same as RAM memory on my MacBook air); can you imagine how many images I can take with my phone of my son? A lot!

So, by the time he meets the love of his life, and get married, what photos will I show out of millions I have taken of him? When his children turn five, what memories of his childhood will he be able to share?

Imagine that my phone last 30 years (the truth is that it lasts 4, but my memory card is full in two months), do you think my son will be able to skim through thousands of photos to find that image he is looking for? No! Simply, no.

Think to be tech-savvy and that you know how to move from an operating system to another over the years. Do you think in thirty years those photos will still be organized and accessible? It will still not be that easy.

Your phone is for taking images to share NOW, to share with your friends on Facebook or Snapchat or Instagram, and it’s a piece of ephemeral media – not permanent nor transcendental.

This generation is going to miss out on the everlasting memories as they rely on handheld devices to capture life’s moments in an instant.

We all enjoy sharing our life with family and friends around the world, so please continue to use your phone and social media because you never know what could happen in a few seconds, but when you have the opportunity, get an actual, physical camera with a decent resolution. You need to think about your children, and the coming years too!

Below is a list of things you can do to preserve those memories over time.

1. Edit the photos instead of retouching them. Make a selection of photos from the month and of the year – keep the best of every memory.

2. Invest in a reliable backup system.
We can talk in detail about that in another post.

3. Print. This is the most important. Even when consumer labs are not professional, it is so much better than have nothing. Make an album or photo box or something creative to showcase those special moments in your loved ones’ lives. When your son is ready to start his own family, you can give something to him.

4. Get a polaroid style camera, they are very affordable nowadays. I love our mini-instant. They are pretty cute, and again... It’s better to have something in your hands than a million things in a hard-drive that will not work in 10 years.

When you are ready to make the investment, hire a lifestyle professional. It will allow you to be in the photos and the professional will be able to get the best shots and make everyone feel like a superstar!

What are some other benefits of hiring a professional lifestyle photographer?

1. Your photos will last for generations to come. Lifestyle photographers are experts in capturing life and photographing the essence of who you and your family are.

2. Professionals photographers use quality equipment that aids in high-resolution images for bigger prints (and screens).

3. The photographer will execute the entire process from beginning to end, and your photos will not disappear in the back of your desk drawer because you are going to have an actual physical and archival piece on your hand.

4. Professionally documenting your family is a financial investment, so you will take better care of it.

5. You will make memories with your lifestyle photographer. These images you will save forever in your heart and in all the mediums possible.

6. You will have a tangible product that you can hold, and you will install or save it in the best place of your house, a forever reminder.

7. A professional photographer is the expert and knows about the best and professional photographic papers, about print, calibration, ink, and how an album can survive for a lifetime.

8. Just think that your great-grandchild will be able to hold and look at a beautiful, clear photo of your life.

Petaluma Lifestyle | Family Session

ByLorena Photography

When Karen called me to schedule a photo session for her family, she had something clear… “my kids cannot be more than 30 minutes in a photo session…. they are shy”. During the time that you have three kids in ages of 2, 4 and 6, you really want to capture them in their own environment, you want real memories, you want photos that talk about them and tell their story…

We decided then to do the session at their place, and what a better location for a family! Also, all the excitement of being the center of attention for the camera can be turned into another play date. So we had 3 boys in their comfortable space. I knew I needed to be fast, I knew I had to run fast, I knew I had to have the camera in super high speed no matter how much could be my ISO!

This session was scheduled for after school, just before the winter sunset. That is their family blanket, their antique tricycle, the stick fight with their dad… They are real, this is how they live and these 30 minutes represent pretty well their life and style. We started with the formal photo for grandma, and then Karen wanted them in their tricycle, doing what they do everyday…

The older boy being the driver, he controlled more of the situation, he likes and knew how to look at the camera as a boss. The middle one is confident, but he prefers to follow his older brother, and when something isn't going the way he likes, he asks mom for help… He is serene, with always a smile on his face. The little one has a depth eyes, he knows what he wants to be, he is fascinated about the world around him.

Dad is funny, he plays the boy stuff. Mom is patient, caring and extraordinary sweet… She adores her boys, she adores memories, and tradition. Their house is full of life, books and toys for all ages. It’s a mix of decades you can smell as your find a dresser from their grandparents filled of legos, star wars, and tranformers… and the armoires that remind us the story of this Californian family mixed with the flavor of home cooked pasta and European wine.

Newborn Lifestyle | Petaluma At-home Photo Session

Meet Ella

Ella was 1 month old, perfect, healthy and always hungry. She was in a cloud when her mom was breastfeeding her, and she was silent and secure on her dad’s hands. Her parents are young, kind and sweet with each other, they look like best friends trying to discover every minute, every challenge with their new rol as a mommy and a daddy. They do it together and I know they are going to continue being a good role model.

When we had the lifestyle photo session, they were moving out in few days and I had the opportunity to meet grandma and grandpa some days before. While we were meeting and getting ready for the photo session, they were a great support, helping and loving Ella too. Grandma helped to choose the outfits, and we were so excited while making this happen. I could understand why mom is such a sweet person and beautiful… like baby Ella is and will be when she grows up.

We started the session around 11 am, dad with his work outfit, the first he wanted to do was to hug his little baby girl, then he made pancakes, and mom put the table…Then breastfeeding Ella, changed her diaper, rocked her, nursed again, diaper changed again and so on… Healthy kids look like they eat a lot, right? Since they were in Petaluma, I visited them next day to capture Ella sleeping, and it was so interesting... different light, different mood, then I felt our lifestyle and documentation photo session was completely captured.

While I am doing these sessions, I am always thinking on 50 years from now… I image them passing the album, page by page and smile… and see how mom seemed, what they were eating, how was their first coach, but specially how much love they had.

Check out what was inside the album!
